This page provides a list of links corresponding to the services your electric vehicle (EV) must have. Pick one and learn about the service your EV might need.
Tire Service
Service for your EV’s tires doesn’t differ much between traditional gas-powered cars and EVs. If you stick to the recommended maintenance schedule, the tires will benefit from receiving attention at the proper intervals.
A tire rotation should be scheduled about every six months. This ensures that the tires will wear out at the same rate. The rotation involves switching the front tires with the rear ones in a specified pattern.
The depth of the tread can tell you how the tire is faring. You can check the depth by inserting a penny into the tread. If Mr. Lincoln’s head disappears, your tires still can do their job. If you can see most of his head, the tires may not be gripping the road as they should.
Due to the extra weight of the battery, EV tires may need to be replaced earlier. Make sure you get regular tire check-ups.
Brake Service
Even though there may be differences in the braking systems between gas-powered vehicles and EVs, you still need to maintain the right level of brake fluid. Plus, the brake calipers will need more lubrication, as you’re using them less often.
The brake pads may need to be updated from time to time but not as frequently in an EV, due to regenerative braking. When you apply the brakes, the regenerative braking captures the energy and puts it back into the battery.
Battery Service
The most important component that powers your EV needs very little maintenance. We highly urge you to park your EV in an enclosed and climate-controlled area if you can, to protect the battery from severe weather conditions.
In extreme climates, the battery pack will need to be updated every eight years or around the 100,000-mile mark. For EV owners in more moderate climates, the battery will not need to be replaced for 12 to 15 years. By that time, you’ll most likely be shopping for another car.
Necessary Fluids, Filters, and Miscellaneous Service
An EV does not need an oil change. However, other fluids must still be put into your car, like brake, transmission, and power steering fluids.
Windshield wipers must be replaced when they start smearing instead of clearing. During cold weather or pollen season, you may need more windshield wiper fluid to keep up with those conditions.
The coolant system must be monitored and the fluid replaced at times as well as the hoses examined for wear and tear. In fact, the entire system must be flushed and recharged regularly.
Of course, the lights will need to be replaced, if they’re no longer working, especially the exterior headlights. The blinkers may need new bulbs every so often as well.
